How to set up AT&T call forwarding to an AI answering service
AT&T makes call forwarding straightforward, but there's one thing to know: some AT&T plans require call forwarding to be enabled on your account before the dial codes work. Here's how to set it up and what to do if it doesn't work on the first try.
Before you start
You'll need your CallHush phone number. You get this when you sign up. Have it ready before you start.
Important: AT&T may require activation
Some AT&T plans don't have call forwarding enabled by default. If dialing *72 gives you an error, call 611 from your AT&T phone and ask them to enable Call Forwarding on your line. It's usually free and takes effect immediately.
Option 1: Forward all calls
This sends every incoming call directly to Lexi. Best for after-hours, vacations, or when you want all calls handled by AI.
To activate:
*72 + [your CallHush number] + tap Call
Example: *72 5125550100 then tap the green Call button.
Wait for a confirmation tone or message. All calls now go to Lexi.
To deactivate:
*73 + tap Call
Your phone will ring normally again.
Option 2: Forward when you don't answer
This is the most popular setup for business owners. Your phone rings normally. If you don't pick up, the call goes to Lexi instead of voicemail.
To activate (AT&T conditional forwarding):
*61*[your CallHush number]# + tap Call
Example: *61*5125550100# then tap Call.
If you don't answer after ~20 seconds, the call forwards to Lexi.
To deactivate:
##61# + tap Call
Option 3: Forward when your line is busy
If you're already on a call and another call comes in, it goes to Lexi instead of going to voicemail or being dropped.
To activate:
*67*[your CallHush number]# + tap Call
To deactivate:
##67# + tap Call
Pro tip: Set up both *61* (no answer) and *67* (busy). This way, Lexi catches calls whether you're unavailable or already talking to someone.

Troubleshooting
Common issues AT&T users run into:
- "Your call cannot be completed as dialed" after *72 - Call forwarding isn't enabled on your account. Call 611 and ask them to add it.
- Calls still go to voicemail - Make sure you set up *61* (no answer forwarding), not just *72. The *72 code only works when you manually activate it.
- Forwarding stopped working - AT&T sometimes resets call forwarding after account changes or plan updates. Re-enter the codes.
