How to set up call forwarding on iPhone and Android

Call forwarding sends your incoming calls to another number - like an AI answering service - when you can't pick up. It takes about 30 seconds to set up and you can turn it on and off anytime.

Here's how to do it on every major platform.

iPhone (iOS)

Option 1: Forward all calls

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Phone
  3. Tap Call Forwarding
  4. Toggle it on
  5. Enter your CallHush number

Note: This forwards every call. Your phone won't ring at all. Good for after-hours or when you're completely unavailable.

Option 2: Forward when unanswered (recommended)

This is the better option for most businesses. Your phone rings normally - if you don't answer within 15-25 seconds, the call forwards to CallHush.

  1. Open the Phone app
  2. Dial: *61*[your CallHush number]#
  3. Press Call
  4. You'll hear a confirmation tone

To disable: dial ##61# and press Call. To also forward when your line is busy, dial *67*[your CallHush number]# as well.

Android

Steps vary slightly by manufacturer (Samsung, Google Pixel, etc.), but the general flow is:

  1. Open the Phone app
  2. Tap the three dots (menu) > Settings
  3. Tap Calls or Supplementary services
  4. Tap Call forwarding
  5. Choose your forwarding type:
    • Always forward - every call goes to CallHush
    • Forward when unanswered - only if you don't pick up (recommended)
    • Forward when busy - only when you're on another call
  6. Enter your CallHush number and tap Enable or Turn on

Landline / business phone

Most VoIP and traditional phone systems support call forwarding:

  • Most landlines: dial *72, then your CallHush number, then # or Call. To disable: *73
  • VoIP systems (RingCentral, Grasshopper, Google Voice): look for "Call forwarding" or "Forwarding rules" in your admin panel
  • Office phone systems: contact your IT admin to add a "forward on no answer" rule

Which forwarding type should you choose?

For most small businesses, "forward when unanswered" is the best setup:

  • Your phone rings normally - you can answer when available
  • If you don't pick up within 15-25 seconds, Lexi answers instead
  • Callers never hear voicemail and never go unanswered
  • You stay in control - turn it off anytime

Use "always forward" when you're completely unavailable - on vacation, in surgery, in court, or after business hours. Some businesses forward all calls after 6 PM and on weekends.

Testing your setup

After setting up forwarding:

  1. Call your own number from a different phone
  2. Let it ring (don't answer)
  3. Lexi should pick up and greet the caller with your business name
  4. Have a quick conversation - say your name, a reason for calling
  5. Check your email - you should get the call summary within seconds

If Lexi doesn't answer, double-check your forwarding number and make sure you chose "forward when unanswered" (not "forward when busy" only). If you're still stuck, email notifications@callhush.com.
