How to set up Verizon call forwarding to an AI answering service
Verizon call forwarding is simple once it's enabled on your plan. Most Verizon plans include it, but some may need it added first. Here's exactly how to forward your Verizon calls to an AI answering service.
Before you start
You'll need your CallHush phone number. You get this when you sign up. Have it handy.
Check your plan first
Most Verizon postpaid plans include Call Forwarding. Some prepaid plans may not. If *72 gives you an error, open the My Verizon app or call *611 to check if Call Forwarding is available on your plan. Adding it is usually free.
Option 1: Forward all calls
Every call goes straight to Lexi. Best for after-hours or when you want all calls handled by AI.
To activate:
*72 + [your CallHush number] + tap Call
Example: *72 5125550100 then tap the green Call button.
You'll hear a confirmation tone or the call may ring once and connect briefly. That means it's active.
To deactivate:
*73 + tap Call
Your phone rings normally again.
Option 2: Forward only when you don't answer
This is what most business owners want. Your phone rings first. If you don't pick up, the call forwards to Lexi instead of going to voicemail. You get first shot at every call.
To activate (conditional forwarding - no answer):
*71 + [your CallHush number] + tap Call
Example: *71 5125550100 then tap Call.
If you don't answer within about 20 seconds, the call goes to Lexi.
To deactivate:
*73 + tap Call
Note: On some Verizon plans, *71 forwards when busy OR unanswered. This is actually ideal because it means Lexi catches calls in both scenarios.
Don't have a CallHush number yet?
Sign up in 2 minutes, get your number, and forward your Verizon calls to Lexi.
Get started - $49/moUsing the My Verizon app
You can also manage call forwarding through the My Verizon app:
- Open the My Verizon app (or go to verizon.com/signin)
- Tap the Account tab
- Select My devices and choose your line
- Tap Manage device
- Look for Call Forwarding under calling features or device settings
- Toggle it on and enter your CallHush phone number
- Choose your forwarding preference (all calls, no answer, or busy)
- Save
The app interface changes periodically, so the exact menu names may differ. If you can't find it, the dial codes above are the most reliable method.
Quick reference: Verizon dial codes
| Action | Code |
|---|---|
| Forward all calls | *72 + number |
| Forward when unanswered/busy | *71 + number |
| Cancel all forwarding | *73 |
| Check plan / enable feature | *611 |
Troubleshooting
Common issues Verizon users run into:
- *72 gives an error or busy signal - Call Forwarding may not be on your plan. Call *611 or check My Verizon to add it.
- Calls still go to Verizon voicemail - Make sure you set up *71 (conditional forwarding). If you only used *72, it only works when you manually activate it each time.
- Forwarding works but then stops - Some Verizon plans reset call forwarding after a certain period. Reactivate by dialing the code again.
- Visual Voicemail interferes - On some phones, Verizon's Visual Voicemail app can override conditional call forwarding. Disable Visual Voicemail in your phone settings if calls keep going to voicemail instead of Lexi.
What happens next
Once forwarding is active, the flow is seamless: a customer calls your Verizon number, if you don't answer (or if you've forwarded all calls), the call goes to your CallHush number, Lexi answers with your business name, has a natural conversation, collects the caller's information, and you get a structured email summary within seconds.
The caller has no idea they spoke to an AI. They just know that a professional, friendly voice answered the phone when they called.
